Information and action on Asian Hornets

Here is some basic information on the habits and biology of the non-native species, the asian hornet (Vespa velutina). This is an invasive species that provides threats to beekeeping, native insect populations, and potentially to human health.

Here are some recommendations we hope all beekeeping members of Canterbury branch can act upon: “recognise and report”

NBU SE region report

Please find attached the report from Sandra Gray, our regional bee inspector. There’s some interesting material on yellow-legged (Asian) hornets, as well as the usual summaries of notifiable diseases (unfortunately still a problem in East Kent), queen imports and exotic pest monitoring.

Dover Honey Show

Our friends at Dover and District BKA are running their Honey Show on 20th October in Shepherdswell Village Hall. All local beekeepers are welcome to enter the open classes in the Show, and we’ve often had good success when members have joined in this very traditional of autumn activities.
Please find attached the Dover Honey Show schedule, and note that entry forms must be submitted by 13th October.

Cherry Festival

Our next meeting-the-public event is coming up quickly, at Brogdale on 15th July.  Running the Canterbury Beekeepers stand is fun and rewarding, particularly if there’s four or more people present to share the load.  We are very grateful to any member who can give up a few hours to help out with our “meet the public” events.  Don’t worry that you don’t know everything about beekeeping – you’ll know more than almost anyone who comes to the stand, and enthusiasm is the single biggest asset at these events!
Please sign up to offer help – if you can’t make the day, perhaps you can supply honey or other hive products, or help prepare the observation hive.
