BBKA winter survival survey results

According to today’s press release from the BBKA, honey bee colony losses are the worst since its winter survival survey began.   A third of all honey bee colonies in England were lost over the winter of 2012/2013 – more than double the losses of the previous year – with increased losses recorded in all regions of England.  SE region figures of 32.4% were very similar to English average of 33.8%

Kent Honey Show

Kent County Show

Bob Smith (New Eltham) is the chief steward for the Kent Honey Show at Detling on 12-14 July, and he is now recruiting volunteers to help staff the show.  In exchange for 2x 2hr sessions of help, you get an entry ticket (worth £20!), so you can use the time between your sessions to enjoy the rest of the event.

In addition to volunteer stewards, Bob is also looking for people to enter the Honey Show (see previous announcement here), as well as supplies of honey for sale.

If you are interested to learn more, there are three attachments which together give a comprehensive description of activities, volunteer responsibilities and rewards, how to supply honey, together with contact details should you wish to contact Bob.

Guidance for the public on honey-bee swarms

With the swarming season seemingly underway in East Kent now, the recent press release from the BBKA for the general public about bee-swarms is well-timed.  This statement will be of general interest to CBKA members, but also as a reference text for “factoids” to drop into conversations with family/friends/work colleagues.
